För att den ser lite ut som en sockertopp kanske? Håller med, det är ett underligt namn. Men å andra sidan, en grythjälm?

Kittelhjälm är olika varianter av en typ som ser ut som en engelsk 1:a världskrigshjälm och inget annat... Ok, de kan se väldigt olika ut...

Det är inte en efterträdare till tunnhjälm utan har ett annat användningsområde.

Är ute efter arkeologiskt belägg eller avbildningar i böcker (som inte är heraldiska)

Sigillen har jag full koll på.

detta har jag förstått gäller:
kittelhjämen änvänds även som namn på den upptill platta tunnhjälmens "kulliga" efterträdare.
Finns i mängder av litteratur från 1800-talet och framåt men det är inte alltid det är klart vad som avses.

Stickhjälm - endast inom tornering (en variant av den som användes i strid). I Sverige första gången omkring 1420.

bygelhjälm - avbildad i Sverige (Rydboholms slott) i mitten av 1500-talet. Men den bör ha funnits här tidigare. eller?

Sin "klassiska" form närmar sig dem dock ca 1230. När de kommer till Sverige är en bra fråga men en studie i Svenska Sigil eller vad boken heter bör ge en fingervisning.
Kittelhjälmen ("kullig sak med brätte") kan man härleda till åtminstone ca 1100 ungefär, och tidigaste nordiska förekomsten torde väl vara Lewis schackpjäserna?
Stickhjälm (bascinett?) utveckalas ur de små järnhättorna man ibland bar under tunnhjälmarna, de börjar täcka bakhuvudet runt 1320 nånting. Tidiga svenska exempel har jag dålig koll på.
Bygelhjälm ("hockeygallerhjälm") dyker upp under 1400-talet som en hjälmtyp som används vid de allt mer specialiserade torneringsformerna, i kung Renes torneringsbok från 1460 så brukas de i en torneringstyp där man med en klubba ska slå av hjälmprydnaden från motståndarens hjälm. Är osäker på de tidigaste svenska exemplen men de bör vara ganska samtida med de kontinentala användandet.
Men som sagt en studie av svenska sigil borde ge en hel del tror jag.
