Vad gäller handtagen finns är faktiskt inga av dem fastsatta på skölden. Det gäller alla sköldarna.

Om man gillar vendeltida sköldar är Greta Arwidssons publikation av Valsgärde 8 från 1954 (detta är också titeln) nog bland det bästa som finns. En av sköldarna där var så pass bevarad att man till och med kunde göra en dendrokronologisk bestämning av en planka. Till och med sköldens läderbeklädning var bevarad.

En sökning på libris visade att boken finns på 12 bibliotek, så den bör gå att låna ganska enkelt. Den brukar också dyka upp på antikvariat då och då

Han drar slutsatsen att att sköldarna antingen var flata eller konvexa i ett plan (s. 28).

Det där med sköldbucklans form får jag väl glömma. Det verkar dock vara återkommande i England att vissa sköldar har konvexa handtag.

Jag tror istället att de sluttande brätterna är ett resultat av den teknik som användes vid tillverkningen av umbon. Det är inga som helst svårigheter att fästa en sådan med sluttande brätten till en flat sköld. Om sluttningen på brättet skulle få bestämma sköldens form skulle det ju heller inte indikera en domformad utan snarare en konisk sköld väl? Den finsnickare som gör en konisk form av ickeradiellt fogade bräder skall fan i mig ha nobelpris.

Man skall nog däremot inte avfärda iden om radiella bräder. Det stora antalet beslag i vendeltida fynd skulle kanske kunna motiveras på så sätt.

Ytterligare ett indicium för böjda sköldar finner man bland sköldbucklor. Brättena är i många fall, t.ex. Högomfallet från folkvandringstid, sluttande. Detta talar väl tillsammans med krökta handtag för att sköldarna ofta var välvda under fvt och vet.

Carolingiska bilder från 700-talet visar krigare med välvda sköldar (minns inte på rak arm var jag sett det,men troligen i Menghin 1983).
En intressant text finner man i dikten Rigthula. Där tror jag det står hur aristokraterna "kröker" eller "böjer" lindsköldar.
Har man någon utgåva av Eddan så går det lätt att finna passagen.

Folkvandringstiden sköldar har jag däremot mycket sämre grepp om.

Legionärernas scutum var välvd, men den var rektangulär. Hjälptruppernas sköldar var ovala eller möjligen runda men inte välvda.
Dock vet jag inte bestämt hur det förhöll sig på 300-talet e.Kr, men jag har inte sett någon rekonstruktion eller arkeologiskt fynds om skulle indikera något sådant.
