"Gamla vadmalsbitar" = vadmal till typ vittröjor? Jag har fått för mig att det är något sånt du är ute efter. Om så är fallet så kolla in böckerna "Beskrifning öfver provinsen Dalarne" av Arosenius, "Övre dalarnas bondekultur under 1800-talets förra hälft" av Levander och Odstedt samt "Gruddbo på Sollerön", mins inte vem som skrivit den. Möjligtvis hittar du något skoj i "Med Dalälven från källorna till havet" också.

Eller så frågar du någon av vävarna på Sätergläntan. Här har vävts rätt mycket vadmal.

sen vet jag inget om stärkelse på medeltiden, men däremot har jag fått lära mig av textilformgivaren (och dalkullan) Grytnäs Barbro att i dräkten från hennes hemtrakter är kjolen starkt veckad och för att behålla vecken så länge och tydligt som möjligt "bakar" man kjolen. vecken fixeras med sömmar och på dem breder man en gröt/pasta av linfröavkok som ju blir extremt klistrigt. sen gräddar man tyget (ovisst i vilken temperatur) för att få det att gå in i yllet. efteråt ska det vara att bara borsta av smulorna. det här är alltså en muntlig lektion jag fått och har inte vare sig sett det utföras eller utfört egna experiment. men där har du kanske nåt att hugga på. leta rätt på en dräktfascist i Dalom så kan du möjligtvis få det bekräftat och ev utvecklat.

En annan fundering är om vadmalen möjligtvis behandlades med någon form av impregnering eller stärkelse? Vadmalsbitarna som jag har undersökt har visserligen legat uppe på ett loft och blivit nedsolkade under mer än ett halvt sekel, så det kanske inte är så konstigt att de blir lättare och mjukare när man tvättat ur dem, men jag undrar om tyget ändå inte innehåller någon form av tillsats som gjort det styvare och mer "stabbigt"...

När man använder t.ex. yllestrumpor smiter det ju ur massa ull som lägger sig som tovade korvar på ytan. Lite samma sak som med noppor.

Frågan är: Skulle detta kunna fungera? Finns det någon här som har testat det? Och finns det belägg för att man har gjort så förr vid valkning av tyger? När jag studerar gamla vadmalsbitar så får jag intrycket av att något liknande faktiskt har gjort på tyget, eftersom den starkt filtade ytan ser ut att ha många liggande och lösa ullfibrer som inte riktigt verkar höra ihop med den ursprungliga väven.
