Den isländska term som återfinns t.ex. i [url="http://www.snerpa.is/net/isl/gisl.htm"]Gisle Sursons Saga[/url] är "friðbönd", det brukar översättas med fredsband på svenska (eng: "peace-band"). Tyvärr finns inga sådana band bevarade - vad jag vet. Överhuvudtaget så är lädret i de svärdsskidor som bevarats mycket mineraliserat och sprött, tunna band torde i allmänhet ha fallit sönder.
Fredsband omtalas även, enligt H. E. Davidson ("<b>The Sword in Anglo-Saxon England</b>", sid 184 f) i Sturlungasagan.

Det rörde sig om en knop som användes för att knyta fast och "låsa" svärd i skidan när man befann sig exempelvis inne i en stad. Skälet var givetvis att svärdet inte skulle "sitta löst" och vara lätt att dra om humöret rann på.

Svårtartad knopstolle som jag är började jag givetvis undra över det här. Finns det en historisk bakgrund eller är det en litterär finess? Och om det finns en verklighetsbakgrund - är det någon som har en aning om vilken knop/vilka knopar som använts?
